By a more efficient washing machine and North Cowichan will help you take your bills to the cleaners.

Chemainus and Crofton residents can get a rebate of between $100 and $200 through a partnership between the municipality and BC Hydro.

The new "Better Off North Cowichan" initiative offers the savings to North Cowichan residents only who are buying select high-efficiency Energy Star washing machines. The rebate offer is only available for two months from May 1 to June 30.

"This rebate program is intended to highlight energy and water savings in our households," Mayor Jon Lefebure said in a media release. "We are pleased to be partnering with BC Hydro on this initiative that helps our community to reach our energy conservation goals."

The Better Off North Cowichan initiative has been developed to help the municipality and its residents to reach the energy and greenhouse gas emission reduction targets outlined in the municipality's award-winning Climate Action and Energy Plan.

Energy Star washing machines use 30 per cent less electricity and up to 50 percent less water than a less efficient washing machine. According to North Cowichan, an average household this can save a family almost $70 a year on top of the rebate.
