Work has officially begun on the Ladysmith Downtown Public Washroom project.

The long-awaited project —spearheaded by the Ladysmith Kinsmen Club — broke ground on Thursday Feb. 25. Duck Paterson, who is the Kinsmen’s spokesperson for the project, said that the work wouldn’t be possible without community partnership.

Dave Stalker Excavating, FMI, Mike Richardson Construction, Goodman Plumbing, and various equipment suppliers are working to build the project. Several community organizations and individuals donated funds to pay for the washroom.
Construction on the washroom project was delayed by the rains and snow that fell on Ladysmith for most of the winter.
Paterson hopes the washroom will be ready by April. However, some of the bathroom components like touchless sinks and paper towel dispensers have been back ordered, and are subject to shipping delays borne by the pandemic.
“It needs to work into everyone’s schedule,” Paterson said. “It’ll definitely be ready by summer… I’ll be glad when we hang the first roll of toilet paper.”
In the meantime, there is a temporary washroom on the corner of 1st Avenue and High Street outside the Temperance Hotel. Once the public washroom project is completed, the temporary washroom will be removed.
