Virtanen, Erkki
Born in Finland, September 24, 1918 and passed away in Ladysmith Hospital April 25, 2004. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Hilkka; three sons, Leo(Sandy), Tauno(Sue Anne), Harry(Lauri); eight grandchildren, Janine, Jeff, his angel Taunya, Dan(Chrystine), Linsey, Trevor, Erik, and Lizzie; nine great-grandchildren, Kayla, Marissa, Katie, Brodie, Cole, Jonathan, Ryan, Jennifer, and Dakota; his brother Eino(Aino), sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Aino and Paavo, and numerous nephews and nieces. After serving in the War with the Finnish Air Force, he worked as a millwright in a paper mill. With his family, he left Finland in 1952 and after finding work with Comox Logging, settled in Ladysmith. He retired in 1983 and during his retirement years, he enjoyed trips to Finland and Sweden and a wonderful holiday to Las Vegas to enjoy his oldest granddaughters’ 21st birthday. He loved his home on Malone Road and especially enjoyed his garden and growing the “best” tomatoes and peas. He had such pride in his family- and his heart grew bigger with each and every arrival of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There will be a celebration of Dad’s life on Wednesday, April 28th at Harry and Lauri’s, 762 DeFrane Crescent at 1:00 p.m. Donations can be made to the Finnish-Canadian Rest Home Association, 2288 Harrison Drive, Vancouver, B.C.
