Melvin Allan WELCH

October 31, 2006

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our father on October 31, 2006, at his home in Surrey, B.C.

Allan was born in Port Alberni on July 17, 1933, and moved with his family to Ladysmith when he was 4 years old, where he lived for another 45 years.

Dad’s first job was with the Scotch Bakery and baking remained an interest all his life.

In 1958 Dad was inducted as the president of the Ladysmith Eagles 2101 Aerie at age 25, the youngest Eagles president in B.C.

Dad also worked at Bell & Malone Garage for many years before moving on to work for MacMillan Bloedel at both the Harmac and Chemainus Divisions. In later years, Dad worked for the Federal Government Dept. of Agriculture from which he retired.

Dad enjoyed travels to Germany, Hong Kong, San Francisco and a cruise to Alaska.

As a self-taught musician, Dad played the accordion, piano and electric organ and he played beautifully! With music as his #1 lifelong passion, he enjoyed going to concerts with his children and granddaughters.

He was predeceased by his father, Allan in 1984 and his mother Bertha in 2000.

Survived by his four children: Tracey (George Sharp), Arden Chailler (Dan Ostler), Bradley and Erin. Also, two granddaughters, Lauren and Michele Chailler and stepgrandson Rob Ostler. His sister June (Bob) Hendy, his nieces: Nancy (Allan) Adams and Leanne Ringma (Neil Robertson), also great-nephew and great-niece Michael and Sara McKinley and their families. As well as numerous cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetic Association would be appreciated.

Funeral Service to be held Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 1:00 pm at Telford’s, 112 French Street, Ladysmith, BC.

Interment will follow at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens.
