Myrtle Mottishaw
passed away at Ladysmith General Hospital on Sunday, March 14, 2004. Predeceased by her husband Henry in 1997, she will be remembered with love and affection by her son David (Cheryl) Mottishaw of Ladysmith, Her daughter Laura (Dennis) Lloyd of Kamloops, her grandsons Peter (Sara) and Jeffrey Mottishaw, her brother Douglas Bennett of Vancouver and many nieces and nephews.
Born October 17, 1922 in Vancouver, Myrtle joined the Canadian Armed Forces in her early twenties. After the war, her sense of adventure led her to the east where she worked as a Librarian in Windsor and New York. In 1950, her marriage to Henry, a teacher, brought more adventures in the remote Kootenays and on Quadra Island, where she took on both the duties of house wife and of school secretary, a ‘volunteer’ position at that time. Myrtle has been a permanent resident of Ladysmith since 1960.
Myrtle took an interest in community affairs, petitioning for sidewalks on Bayview Road and working to preserve Ladysmith Harbour. She believed passionately in the need to maintain a full service hospital in Ladysmith.
Myrtle found delight in the accomplishments of the community’s children, she treasured the arts and music, and she had a profound love and respect for the natural beauty of our province. Her gift at recognizing the ‘special’ in the simple things of life is perhaps her greatest legacy to those whose lives she touched.
