BASARAB, Stefan – Born January 25th, 1922 in the village of Pidhirya, Ukraine. Passed away October 28, 2007 at Chemainus Healthcare Centre, Chemainus, British Columbia.

Stefan first immigrated to Maple Creek, Saskatchewan where he worked on a farm for a short time. After about 2 weeks he was able to obtain employment with the CPR. Dad was lucky enough when an open posting became available in Ladysmith, BC and as he had studied the geography of the west coast and learned the weather was milder he transferred there and became the assistant foreman.

He came back to Maple Creek in early December 1951 where he met his future wife, Erna. After about 2 weeks they began corresponding by letter. Mom received letters every 2 weeks. She still has them. They married June 17, 1952 in Mom's home town. They settled in Chemainus in 1953 where they bought their first and only home on Garner Street and began their family life together.

Dad was always a hard worker. During the time Dad worked for the CPR between '52-'53 he applied for employment with MacMillan Bloedel in Chemainus . Dad continued to work for MacMillan Bloedel in the sawmill until 1982 when the mill closed down, accepting early retirement. Upon retirement Dad enjoyed puttering around the yard working in his garden and raising chickens.

Stefan leaves behind his wife of 55 years Erna of Chemainus, his daughter MaryAnn Denham (Ken), sons Bill (Lynne), and Father Steven, grandchildren Shauna (Todd), and Cara (David), Brent (Jana), Jennifer (Jamie), and Eric, 4 great grandchildren Kennedy and Marcus, Dylan and Taylor. In the Ukraine Stefan leaves behind his sister and brother along with many cousins, nieces and nephews

Flowers gratefully declined. Those who wish may donate to the Chemainus Healthcare Centre in his memory.

Memorial Service to be held at a later date.

And now Dad, we'd like to say

"Tato, dobra neech", goodnight.
