BATTIE, Stewart Leroy

July 5, 1928 – March 14, 2009

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, uncle and friend Stewart (Stew) Battie. He was predeceased by his parents Rud and Mary Battie, sister Margaret DeClark, and brother Jack Battie. He leaves to mourn his best friend and companion June Babchuk, brothers Rud (Ellen) Battie, Ron (Norene) Battie, sister Paddy (Murray) Chadwick as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Upon completion of his education, Stewart started his career at Island Publishers in Ladysmith and worked his way up the ladder to become a linotype operator for the Nanaimo Free Press until his retirement. All his life he was involved in his church and sports. He was an avid fund raiser for the Horseshoe and Eagles Clubs spending many volunteer hours, including peeling potatoes for the many dinners. Being an avid sportsman he has many trophies for participating in many tournaments for the Traveller's Hotel men's Softball team (champions), bowling and horseshoes. Stew was never one to criticize but was always there if you needed him. His happiness came from knowing family and friends cared about one another no matter what! Life was too short to not enjoy it in harmony and happiness. We will all cherish his memory and miss his great stories.

“God speed till we meet again.”

Service will be held on Friday March 27, 2009 at 11:00am at St. Mary's Catholic Church followed by internment at Ladysmith Cemetery.
