Lake Cowichan visitors impressed with blackout kindness

A thousand thank yous to the kind residents of Lake Cowichan.

Thank you to the organizers who took the time out of their day and volunteered by offering warm showers at the high school in Lake Cowichan, during the five day blackout caused by a powerful storm that swept through the forests bringing down large trees and pulling down hydro lines everywhere.

As the rain pummeled outside, we were being rescued with showers, biscuits and coffee which felt like Santa Claus had really arrived. A delicious home made soup was there for the eating as well; it was delicious.

My husband and I are seniors; we were visiting our daughter and son-in-law and our grandson for the holidays. Warm water that flows out of a faucet is something that is not given much thought until it disappears and is gone for days. Even now, home in Chilliwack, as I turn on the warm tap I am still aware when I didn’t have that luxury. Cold running water is not a comforting thing just before bedtime. These aging eyes don’t focus very well to read in the candlelight.

A pre-Christmas shower is the gift I wanted more than a duck dinner.

We five were happy when BC Hydro’s white truck pulled in through the darkness to light up our Christmas Eve.

Best Wishes to Santa’s volunteers who waited patiently from 2-6 p.m. at the Lake Cowichan high school. You really left a wonderful impression.
