Ban tire toxin

Dear North Cowichan council, CVRD directors, and Cowichan MP Alistair MacGregor:

We urge Cowichan’s local governments and our federal leaders to act immediately toward saving salmon stocks by requesting a ban of the tire-wear chemical 6PPD-quinone being released on Canadian roads.

Details about the salmon-lethal chemical are found in the Nanaimo New Bulletin’s timely April 30, 2024 story.

That fearful report comes as waterways across Canada and Cowichan are potentially receiving run-off water carrying trace amounts of 6PPD-quinone that could poison our threatened juvenile fish plus other aquatic creatures.

We implore MP MacGregor to raise this terrible toxin in Parliament.

Cowichan’s eco-wise leaders are likewise urged to study local 6PPD-quinone concentrations in our rivers, streams and lakes — then install needed catchment ponds such as those in the U.S. and beyond.

Forewarned is forearmed regarding potentially lethal chemical pollution.

Yours in ecological health,

Peter W. Rusland

North Cowichan
