You will find “Measure Twice, Cut Once” podcasts on iTunes, Spotify and Google podcasts.

In This Episode: Henri Belisle of TQ Construction and homeowner Dr Janet Simons are back to review the now-completed heritage renovation project. With the goal of achieving a high-performance energy efficiency home, Henri and Janet share lessons learned including design build challenges, scope creep, and even some pesky woodpeckers too.

‘We built it the way we thought would be the best structurally, because that’s what our instinct led us to do. But then going through it, we realized that if we had basically built the stair slightly off the wall, and properly sealed it there, we wouldn’t have lost as much air in the building through that one point.’ Henri Belisle, TQ Construction

‘There’s always trade offs. Understanding what we are willing to trade off is important. There’s always going to be a judgment, is the builder going to talk to the client about this or are they going to make a call on the homeowner’s behalf because you can’t be calling 18 times a day for every decision. So, I think there’s some calibration always that goes on there regarding communication.’ Dr Janet Simons, Homeowner.
